Danish MCM Teak Table Restoration
I believe I was about 21 in 1986
when I bought this Danish mid century modern extending teak
table at a garage sale in Alaska. It was love at first
sight, and I was delighted to pay only $25 for what I recognized
as a beautiful, quality and versatile table, that included three
chairs. The original owners told me they had bought it in
the 60's and had it while they raised their family. It had
quite a few blemishes, scratches and signs of wear, but I still
loved it. It served as my desk throughout college and has
been Joan and my kitchen table for 25 years. I've been
wanting to restore it for the past many years, but have been
intimidated because the main surface is a thin veneer of teak.
Over-sanding could destroy it. I've also been putting off
restoring it because Nana is pretty hard on it; that's a story
in itself. Over the past few days I sanded my old table down with a palm sander with 80, 120 and 240 grit. I then hand sanded it with 400 and 800 grit. The only finish is a few coats and rubbing of tung oil. I'm pretty happy with it.
