SPEAKER: February 26: Ernie Phillips, Marine Corps, was an orderly for Adm Spruance on the heavy cruiser USS Northampton

JANUARY MEETING SUMMARY: James McNeill, US Navy, was on board the

battleship USS West Virginia at Pearl Harbor and at the battle at Surigao Strait and Iwo

Jima and aboard a heavy cruiser at the battle off Guadalcanal. In all he participated in 11

battles. There was chaos on the afternoon of Sunday, December 7 and in the next 2 days

before things were straightened out. The crews did not anticipate the attack on December 7. He

was in his whites ready to go on liberty when the first torpedo hit the West Virginia.
