Hoban Versus St. V Football (page 1)

Nikon D200, 1972 Nikkor 300mm f4.5, monopod, manual exposure & focus

Friday night I attended and watched my first football game ever. Yes, you read that right; I'm 49 I've never been to a pro sporting event and never watch football, or nearly any sport, on TV. I've seen bits and pieces, but have never sat down and watched an entire game of football before. Anyway, this was a fantastic game that went into triple overtime. St V scored early on and then Hoban scored twice. In the 4th quarter St. V scored putting them ahead by 3. Hoban kicked a field goal to tie it up with 7 seconds left in the game. Both teams scored in the overtimes, but St. V came out ahead. It was an exciting game to watch.

I accidentally wore my St. V Rocket Team shirt to the game. Svea said that everyone on the Hoban side was wearing white. The only white tee shirt I had in my drawer was a TARC Rocket Team shirt. I put it on without much thought. On the way to the game Brigitta exclaimed, "Dad, your shirt says, St. Vincent - St. Mary in big letters across the back. I laughed pretty hard. The girls convinced me to turn it inside out.

I brought my camera to amuse myself. I've had an old 1972 Nikkor 300mm f4.5 manual focus/aperture lens for a year or two, but I've never found a good use for it and have never taken any pictures with it that I really liked. My Nikon D200 was first released in 2005; it's a good camera but its ISO only goes up to 3200 with quite a bit of noise, even in raw files. There was enough light in the Akron Zips stadium that I was able to shoot most of the shots below at 1/500 or above at f4.5. I'm usually pretty terrible at manual focus, but last night about half were within acceptable focus. I think the greater depth of field at f4.5 over the f2.8 that I normally shoot at makes focus more forgiving. Usually I'm happy with one in ten.
