June 26th Island Expansion

5-24-2014 ~ Blog # 628

(David)

I've been kayaking in Mogador Reservoir for over a decade.  The entire reservoir is relatively shallow and in 2007 I discovered a hard-to-spot shallow, boulder-strewn area far from shore that was about a foot deep.  The next day I returned with an anchor and gloves.  I spent a couple hours wading around stacking most of the boulders into a rough pyramid.  When I was done I had built a tiny island and named it June 26th Island.  It's a stupid name, but at least I know when it was made.  I figure my work must have saved a few boat propellers.  Over the winter the shifting lake ice shaved off the top layer of boulders.  In the spring I brought the family and we rebuilt it.  Ever since them other people have rebuilt it every spring.  It would be nice if someone dumped some wet concrete into the pile to bind it together.

On the way to Wingfoot Lake earlier in the week we noticed that the reservoir was more than a foot lower than usual.  I thought it would be an ideal opportunity to restack the island and see my favorite lake from a new perspective.  On Saturday the girls, Abby and I paddled to the island.  Abby complained the entire way.  We discovered that the shallow surrounding area was completely above water and we were able to pull the boats onto the shore.  We added a few hundred good sized stones from a bit further out to the island pile.  When the water lever returns the island should be larger than ever.   Abbey's favorite part was rolling in a dead fish; why do dogs do that?

Here's a five minute HD movie of our little expedition.  (300MB)

Goodyear Rigid Airship and Wingfoot Lake Airdock Tour

5-21-2014 ~ Blog # 627

(David)

On Wednesday members of the IHM Rocket Team toured the Wingfoot Lake Airdock and Goodyear's new semi-rigid Zeppelin-collaboration airship.  Hoban alumni and Assistant Pilot in Charge Michael Dougherty seemed to know everything there is to know about the history and construction of Goodyear Airships.  The new semi-rigid airship may look like the old blimp from 10 miles away, but it is visibly very different.  The greatest visible difference is that the gondola in the new airship hangs far forward of center and it has three big yellow tailfins instead of four blue with yellow trim fins.  Another noticeable change is that the variable pitch props and rotating motors are now mounted on the sides of the airframe and the tail. For those of you who have not been lucky enough to touch an airship up close, I will tell you it feels like an air mattress.

School was closed on Tuesday after a severe storm damaged and closed roads Monday night.  So, I got a bike ride in.  A shop in Kent had it's garage door open and this car caught my eye.  It's a very old, nicely restored DeTamble.
